Qualifications to Lead

Text: Joshua 24:15

How do we decide who we will serve/follow? This is a common question in an election year. But this lesson focuses on matters more important than politics. Joshua challenged the people to choose, while he had already made his choice. Why follow God? What qualifies Him to be our king & worthy of honor & respect?

He is the Creator

  • The fact that He created all things gives Him the right to rule over us (Revelation 4:11)
  • All good things come from God (James 1:17) – we show our gratitude by serving Him (Hebrews 12:28)

He is Righteous

  • Kings are expected to act righteously (Proverbs 16:12)
  • No one is more righteous than God (Romans 3:10; 1 John 1:5; Titus 1:2)
  • Rulers must support righteousness (Proverbs 17:26) and oppose wickedness (Romans 13:3-4)
  • The Lord is able to save & support those who are righteous (Hebrews 7:25) and is willing & able to punish the wicked (2 Peter 3:3-7)

He is Just

  • A king gives stability to a land by justice (Proverbs 29:4)
  • The Lord is the supreme Judge (James 4:12) – He does not make mistakes (Matthew 5:48); He understands the law perfectly (John 1:1); He does not show partiality (Acts 10:34-35); He never lacks evidence/information needed to pass judgment (Proverbs 15:3; Hebrews 4:12-13)

He is Powerful

  • The king represents the power of the nation (Proverbs 30:29-31) – he bears the sword (Romans 13:4)
  • If God has power to create the world (Romans 1:20), He has the power to destroy it (2 Peter 3:10)
  • His power should result in us fearing Him (Matthew 10:28) – fear should lead to obedience (Ecclesiastes 12:13)

He is Wise

  • Kings & rulers are to reign with wisdom (Proverbs 8:15-16)
  • Wisdom originated with God (Proverbs 8:22)
  • No one is able to counsel Him (Proverbs 21:30) – His ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9; 1 Corinthians 1:25)

He Desires Our Good

  • Kings are not to use their position to enrich themselves (Deuteronomy 17:16-17) – despite his position, the king & the common man were equals (Deuteronomy 17:20)
  • God certainly desires our good (John 3:16; 2 Peter 3:9)
