Text: Philippians 1:27-30
Not Dependent Upon the Approval of Others
- Whether Paul came or remained absent, he wanted them to be faithful (cf. Philippians 2:12)
- Christians certainly provide a benefit to one another – encouragement (Hebrews 3:12-13), accountability (James 5:16.19-20)
- But we must be of the mind that we will serve God, even if no one knows any different – example of Joseph (Genesis 39:7-12); our goal is to please God, not men (Galatians 1:10)
Stand Firm
- The gospel is an unchanging standard (Galatians 1:6-9)
- If we do not stand firm, we will depart from the faith (Hebrews 2:1-3)
- Stand firm in the word of God (Ephesians 6:11-14; 2 Thessalonians 2:15; 1 Peter 5:12)
Be of One Spirit and One Mind
- We must preserve unity (Ephesians 4:3)
- One spirit – united in purpose (Philippians 2:1-5)
- One mind – united in doctrine & practice (1 Corinthians 1:10)
Strive Together for the Faith of the Gospel
- Work together for a common cause – the work God has given to the church: evangelism (1 Timothy 3:15; 1 Thessalonians 1:8) & edification (Hebrews 10:24-25; Ephesians 4:16)
- Avoid unauthorized works (Colossians 3:17) – striving together for something other than or contrary to the faith of the gospel is no virtue
Be Ready to Suffer for His Sake
- Do not be alarmed at your opposition – it will exist, be ready for it
- Persecution will come (2 Timothy 3:12)
- Those who endure will be rewarded (Matthew 24:13; 2 Timothy 4:7-8)
