“You Were Unwilling”

Text: Matthew 23:37-38

Calvinism teaches that salvation is unconditional and that grace is irresistible. The reason for this is that man (allegedly) has no free will. Therefore, man would be unable to make the decision on his own to serve the Lord. Many passages refute this idea. This passage is one of them.

The Lord Desires to Save

  • How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings
  • The Lord takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked (Ezekiel 18:23, 32)
  • He desires all to be saved (2 Peter 3:9)

In Spite of Man’s Sins

  • Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her!
  • Jesus died for us while we were sinners and enemies of God (Romans 5:8, 10)
  • Example of Paul – chiefest of sinners, example of the Lord’s “perfect patience” (1 Timothy 1:15-16)

We Must Willingly Come to Him

  • You were unwilling
  • He invites us (Matthew 11:28-30)
  • But we must obey (Matthew 7:21-23)
