Blessed Are the Dead Who Die in the Lord

Text: Revelation 14:13

When a faithful child of God passes away, this verse is often used to comfort those who are grieving. But it is important to understand why these individuals are blessed.

They Are Blessed Because They Have Died in the Lord

  • In one sense, we might say that all who have died are blessed – they have escaped the troubles of this life (Ecclesiastes 4:1-2)
  • However, when we look past this life, we know that not all are blessed in the afterlife (Matthew 25:46)
  • Only those who die in the Lord will be blessed after death – these are those who have been baptized into Christ (Romans 6:3; Galatians 3:27) and remain in Christ by keeping His word (1 John 2:5)

They Are Blessed Because They Now Have Rest

  • The place awaiting the faithful is a place of comfort as opposed to agony (Luke 16:25)
  • It is important to note that in our service to God, rest comes after death, not before – we must be faithful until death (Revelation 2:10)
  • If we are not diligent (hard-working in the Lord’s service) we will miss the promised rest (Hebrews 4:1, 11)

They Are Blessed Because of Their Labors in Life

  • Between the time when we are baptized into Christ & obtain our rest, we must labor (Matthew 28:19-20) – become disciples/learners (2 Timothy 2:15) and doers (James 1:22)
  • The labors that will be rewarded are those that are in harmony with the will of God (Matthew 7:21-23) – we will not be rewarded for labors that are presumptuous or in rebellion to His will

They Are Blessed Because Their Deeds Follow with Them

  • This means that our eternal fate depends upon our deeds in life
  • While the grace of God is essential for salvation (Ephesians 2:8), He grace is conditional
  • We will all stand before Him in judgment (2 Corinthians 5:10) – we will be rewarded or punished based upon what we have done

Conclusion

  • These words were not revealed to comfort the dead – they are to both comfort & admonish those who are yet alive
  • Remember the promised reward, the example of the departed faithful, and the instructions in God’s word
  • But do not just remember – also do what the Lord expects so that you can join the Lord & His faithful servants in eternity
