Raising Children in a Wicked World

Text: Genesis 6:5-10

Is it possible to raise godly children in a wicked world? Yes! It has been done before and it can be done again. However, that does not mean it will be easy. Parents must be diligent and trust in God’s plan, no matter how wicked the world becomes.

Wickedness in the World is Nothing New

  • Many problems in our society (abortion, homosexuality, pornography, the entitlement mentality, etc.) – but there is nothing new under the sun (Ecclesiastes 1:9)
  • The Bible describes some wicked societies (Genesis 6:5; 13:13; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11) – it was possible for people to become/remain righteous in these societies (1 Peter 3:20; 2 Peter 2:7-8; Acts 18:9-10)
  • The problem that exists in every society is sin (Romans 3:23) – even in the best of circumstances, we will always be surrounded by ungodly people (Matthew 7:13-14)
  • So parents need to be able to raise their children in this sort of environment

Keep Priorities in Order

  • Parents must teach children to put spiritual things first (Matthew 6:33) – God’s eternal reward is far greater than anything we might have to give up in this life (Matthew 16:26; Hebrews 11:24-26; Matthew 19:29)
  • Parents must teach children that work is good (Ecclesiastes 9:10), but the goal must be right (Proverbs 3:9) – too often people allow work and its worldly-centered goals to choke out the word (Luke 8:14)
  • Parents must teach children that relationships are good (Genesis 2:18; Proverbs 17:17; Ecclesiastes 4:9-12) – but loyalty to Christ must come first (Matthew 10:34-37; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18)

Guard Children from Evil Influences

  • This is not to say that children should be “sheltered” – but they should not be put in spiritual danger unnecessarily
  • Parents need to be careful (1 Corinthians 15:33) – their responsibility to bring up children in the Lord (Ephesians 6:4) is too important to risk out of fear that their children might be “sheltered”
  • Children can be easily influenced to follow the wrong path (Ephesians 4:14; 1 Corinthians 14:20) – parents cannot shield their children from everything; but during their formative years, they must seriously guard them from evil influences
