“Make My Joy Complete”

Text: Philippians 2:2

One of the themes in Paul’s letter to Philippi is joy. In our text, he talked about his joy being made complete. This would be done if these brethren maintained unity – in mind, love, spirit, and purpose.

Be of the Same Mind

  • Likeminded” (KJV) – common understanding
  • Unity comes as a result of us understanding the Scriptures alike (1 Corinthians 1:10) – not “unity in diversity”; we are to have the same understanding as the inspired apostles (Ephesians 3:3-4)
  • How can we be of the “same mind” (common understanding)? … focus on the Scriptures (Isaiah 8:20); unite upon what the word of God says (John 17:20-21; Ephesians 4:11-14)

Maintain the Same Love

  • Having the same love” (KJV) – brotherly love (agape)
  • Unity comes as we put the interests of others ahead of our own (Philippians 2:3-8) – love the brethren as Christ has loved us (John 13:34-35; 1 John 3:16); includes love for God (John 14:15)
  • Love is not just something we talk about (1 John 3:18) – maintain the same love for God by keeping His commandments (1 John 5:3); maintain the same love for the brethren by doing good (Galatians 6:10)

Be United in Spirit

  • Of one accord” (KJV) – maintaining fellowship
  • God expects His people to work together – unity allows us to work together for the growth of the body (Ephesians 4:3,11-16); we complement one another (1 Corinthians 12:18-20)
  • We must not allow petty differences to disrupt our unity (Philippians 4:2-3) – we are weaker when we are divided (Matthew 12:25); work together in the cause of Christ

Be Intent on One Purpose

  • Of one mind” (KJV) – common goal [same term as in the first point, but a different meaning]
  • We must be intent upon serving Christ in all that we do (Matthew 28:20; John 2:5) – salvation is for all those who obey (Hebrews 5:9)
  • We must be intent upon reaching heaven (Philippians 3:12-15) – our citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20); do not allow the things of this life to distract you from that goal (Matthew 16:26)
