Being a Productive Christian

Text: Ephesians 5:15-16

Many books, articles, and websites are dedicated to the subject of productivity. While this is good in our work and business, the Scriptures teach the importance of being productive in our spiritual lives. In this lesson, we will see what the Bible says about how to be a productive Christian.

Productivity Is Not Busyness

  • Important point that productivity experts emphasize – being busy does not always mean we are being productive; productivity is about accomplishing our important tasks effectively and efficiently
  • This is important to remember when it comes to being a productive Christian – being busy does not always mean we are being productive in our efforts to serve God (Jeremiah 9:5; Luke 10:38-42; Matthew 22:1-5)
  • Being busy is not good when we are too busy to focus on spiritual things and serving the Lord

How to Be a Productive Christian

  • Recognize what is most important (Philippians 3:4-11) – nothing more important than our souls (Matthew 16:26); our ambition must be to please the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:9-10)
  • Focus on what is important (Matthew 6:33) – set your mind on things above (Colossians 3:1-4); do not allow yourself to become distracted (Hebrews 12:1-2; Luke 8:14)
  • Spend time on what is important (Ephesians 5:16) – reading/studying the Scriptures (2 Timothy 2:15; 3:16-17; Acts 20:32); praying to God (Philippians 4:6-7; Hebrews 4:14-16); assembling with the church (Hebrews 10:24-25); spending time with other Christians (Hebrews 3:12-13); fulfilling our God-given earthly responsibilities (1 Timothy 5:8; 6:17-19)
  • Manage your energy so you can keep doing what is important (Galatians 6:9) – when we expend energy, we get tired (Ecclesiastes 5:12; John 4:6); we need times to rest (Mark 6:45-46, 30-32); we need to be zealous in serving the Lord (Titus 2:14), but also recognize that the Christian life is a marathon (Hebrews 12:1-3)

  • Being a productive Christian is not about doing a lot of just anything – it is about properly doing the right thing
  • Recognize what is important – spiritual things, serving the Lord, a home in heaven
  • Devote the attention, time, and energy necessary in order to please the Lord
