“If God Is For Us”

Text: Romans 8:31-39

Paul’s words at the end of Romans 8 were meant to be a source of encouragement for the saints in Rome. They ought to be encouraging for us as well. “God is for us.” Knowing this, we can make it through any challenge that may come against us.

If God is for us…

  • If” does not indicate uncertainty (cf. Colossians 3:1) – used in the sense of “since” (Since God is for us…)
  • He has already proven that He is “for us” (cf. Romans 1:16; 5:6, 8; 6:17-18, 23; 8:28-30)

Who is against us?

  • We will face opposition as Christians (John 15:18-19; 2 Timothy 3:12; 1 Peter 4:12)
  • Who will be against us? – family (Matthew 10:34-37), friends (Luke 21:16), brethren (2 Corinthians 11:26; Galatians 4:16), religious enemies (John 16:2-3), authorities (Romans 8:38; Revelation 2:10)

God Blesses Us (v. 32)

  • Freely gives us all things (cf. James 1:17) – everything we need in this life (Genesis 8:22; Colossians 1:16-17); everything we need for spiritual life (Ephesians 1:3-14); everything we need to know in His word (2 Peter 1:3; Jude 3)
  • Proof of His willingness to bless us – He gave His Son to die for us (Romans 5:8)

God Justifies Us (v. 33)

  • To be justified means that God recognizes us as being righteous / right before Him – through His grace (Romans 3:24) and the blood of Christ (Romans 5:9); by our faith (Romans 5:1) and our works (James 2:24; cf. James 1:22)
  • Others may charge us – but only God’s opinion counts (Romans 14:4, 10; 2 Corinthians 5:9-10)

Christ Intercedes for Us (v. 34)

  • Jesus died on the cross to make our justification possible; now He is in heaven interceding for us – this is His role as high priest (Hebrews 7:25); through Him we can come boldly to the throne of grace (Hebrews 4:14-16)
  • Others may condemn us – but we have an advocate in the presence of God for us (1 John 2:1)

God Loves Us (v. 35-39)

  • God has shown that He loves us – by sending Christ to die for us while we were yet sinners (Romans 5:8); by causing all things to work together for good for us (Romans 8:28)
  • No one can separate us from His love – we may separate ourselves from the blessings of His love (John 15:10; 1 John 5:3); but as long as we are faithful, no one can be victorious over us (Romans 8:37)

  • We will face disappointments, challenges, opposition, and more in this life
  • But we must never forget that “God is for us” and that we “overwhelmingly conquer through Him
  • So let us take courage and remain faithful to Him through every challenge and hardship in this life
