Text: 1 Corinthians 12:27
In our text, Paul explained that Christians were individually part of a collective body. They each had a role to play and responsibilities as individuals. They were also to contribute to the function of the body as a whole. In the next two lessons, we’re going to discuss these different responsibilities. In this lesson, we’re going to consider our responsibilities as individuals.
Walk in a Worthy Manner (Colossians 1:10)
- This is to walk in a way that reflects God’s will for us – includes obedience and spiritual growth
- We must remain faithful (Revelation 2:10) – even if others do not (Revelation 3:1-4)
Study and Know the Word (2 Timothy 2:15)
- We must learn to accurately handle the word for ourselves
- We must always be willing to test what is taught (1 Thessalonians 5:21-22; Acts 17:11)
Provide for Our Own (1 Timothy 5:8)
- We are to do this to the extent that we are able – [we’ll discuss what happens when we’re not able in the next point]
- We are to work so as not to be a burden to others (2 Thessalonians 3:7-10) – again, as we are able
Help Those in Need (Galatians 6:10)
- Take advantage of opportunities to do good – to brethren in Christ and those in the world
- This is one reason why we work (Ephesians 4:28) – work to have more than you “need”
Fulfill Our Various Roles (Colossians 3:18-4:1)
- There are responsibilities we have as husbands, wives, children, parents, masters, servants – others roles too
- We each have different roles to play – no one can do this for us
Be a Light in the World (Matthew 5:16)
- We do this through our good works – causes others to glorify God
- We will influence others that no one else will – make sure to be an influence for good (1 Peter 2:12)
Prepare for Judgment (2 Corinthians 5:10)
- We will be judged according to what we have done in this life – “each one” will be judged in this way
- We are each responsible for ourselves (Ezekiel 18:20)
Conclusion
- Each one of us will stand before the Lord in judgment
- No matter what anyone else does or does not do, we must make sure we are faithful to the Lord
