Man’s Helplessness without God (v. 4-5)
- We have no hope without God (Ephesians 2:12)
- Why? … Sin (Isaiah 59:2; Romans 6:23)
God Showed Kindness to Man (v. 6)
- This was done while man was in his helpless state (Romans 5:6-10)
- As we will see, grace does not guarantee salvation (Titus 2:11; Matthew 7:13-14)
Covenant between God & Man (v. 8)
- A covenant is an agreement between two parties (Amos 3:3)
- We enter this covenant today through baptism (Galatians 3:27,29)
Man Can Break His Covenant Relationship with God (v. 15-22)
- God’s people can fall away (2 Corinthians 6:1)
- “You did not remember” (v. 22) — Often sin because we forget the miserable state we were in before (Ephesians 2:12); then go back to it (2 Peter 2:22)
- Different type of harlot (v. 32-34) — typical harlot received gifts; Jerusalem gave away the gifts God had given
The Unfaithful Will Be Punished (v. 35-41)
- God’s reward is conditioned upon continued faithfulness (Revelation 2:10)
- We will not escape punishment if we depart from God (Hebrews 2:1-3)
The Unfaithful Can Be Restored (v. 60-63)
- God wants all to be saved (2 Peter 3:9)
- If we fall away, He is willing to receive us back & forgive us (1 John 1:9)
