God’s Grace to Jerusalem

Text: Ezekiel 16

Man’s Helplessness without God (v. 4-5)

  • We have no hope without God (Ephesians 2:12)
  • Why? … Sin (Isaiah 59:2; Romans 6:23)

God Showed Kindness to Man (v. 6)

  • This was done while man was in his helpless state (Romans 5:6-10)
  • As we will see, grace does not guarantee salvation (Titus 2:11; Matthew 7:13-14)

Covenant between God & Man (v. 8)

  • A covenant is an agreement between two parties (Amos 3:3)
  • We enter this covenant today through baptism (Galatians 3:27,29)

Man Can Break His Covenant Relationship with God (v. 15-22)

  • God’s people can fall away (2 Corinthians 6:1)
  • You did not remember” (v. 22) — Often sin because we forget the miserable state we were in before (Ephesians 2:12); then go back to it (2 Peter 2:22)
  • Different type of harlot (v. 32-34) — typical harlot received gifts; Jerusalem gave away the gifts God had given

The Unfaithful Will Be Punished (v. 35-41)

  • God’s reward is conditioned upon continued faithfulness (Revelation 2:10)
  • We will not escape punishment if we depart from God (Hebrews 2:1-3)

The Unfaithful Can Be Restored (v. 60-63)

  • God wants all to be saved (2 Peter 3:9)
  • If we fall away, He is willing to receive us back & forgive us (1 John 1:9)
