Text: 1 Corinthians 11:23-29
Origin of the Teaching
- Originated with Christ (Matthew 26:26-29)
- Received by Paul
- Delivered to the Corinthians
- Now they are being reminded
A Simple Memorial
- Emblems — bread to represent Christ’s body, cup to represent Christ’s blood
- Observance — giving of thanks, brief comments, partaking
- Place — in the assembly (v. 18,20,33)
- Frequency — every first day of the week (Acts 20:7)
Focus of the Lord’s Supper
- Purpose of the memorial is to remember the death of Christ (v. 26)
- This is not about the resurrection
- It is not about what has happened in our lives
Partake in a Worthy Manner
- We get into trouble if we partake in an unworthy manner (v. 27.29)
- Partake in the way we are instructed
- Examine yourself (v. 28)
