Instructions About the Lord’s Supper

Text: 1 Corinthians 11:23-29

Origin of the Teaching

  • Originated with Christ (Matthew 26:26-29)
  • Received by Paul
  • Delivered to the Corinthians
  • Now they are being reminded

A Simple Memorial

  • Emblems — bread to represent Christ’s body, cup to represent Christ’s blood
  • Observance — giving of thanks, brief comments, partaking
  • Place — in the assembly (v. 18,20,33)
  • Frequency — every first day of the week (Acts 20:7)

Focus of the Lord’s Supper

  • Purpose of the memorial is to remember the death of Christ (v. 26)
  • This is not about the resurrection
  • It is not about what has happened in our lives

Partake in a Worthy Manner

  • We get into trouble if we partake in an unworthy manner (v. 27.29)
  • Partake in the way we are instructed
  • Examine yourself (v. 28)
