Text: Matthew 16:18
I
- Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God (Matthew 16:16)
- He is our Savior (2 Timothy 1:10), King (John 18:36-37), and is Deity (John 1:1)
- This is important because Jesus’ identity would be the foundation of His church (Matthew 16:18)
Will
- Indicates a future time when His plan would be carried out
- This plan was certain (cf. Titus 1:2; John 5:17)
- When would this church be established? … Soon (Matthew 16:28); would come with power (Mark 9:1), which would come with Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8), who would come at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4) — here the church was established (Acts 2:47)
Build
- Jesus came to establish a new church / kingdom (Daniel 2:44)
- This would not be a physical building, but a spiritual one (1 Peter 2:5-8; Ephesians 2:20-22)
My
- The church belongs to Christ (Acts 20:28)
- He makes the rules & we must be subject to Him (Ephesians 5:23-24)
- We proclaim & promote Christ, not ourselves (2 Corinthians 4:5)
Church
- The church is the same as the kingdom (Matthew 16:18-19)
- Jesus did not come to build a social club, college, charity, day care, etc.
