Romans 13:11-14
After discussing a Christian’s obligations to their civil authorities and their neighbors, Paul addresses personal holiness and our responsibility to be wholly right before God.
Know the Time (v. 11-12)
- These are matters of eternal consequence – many want to ignore these things and enjoy the here and now, but we cannot do this (Luke 12:19-20)
- It is time to wake up – be aware of where we are, what is going on around us, and what is coming in the future
- Salvation is nearer now than when we believed – matter of urgency
- Knowing that the night is gone and the day is near: lay aside the deeds of darkness (cf. 1 John 2:1) and put on the armor of light (cf. Ephesians 6:11-17)
Behave Properly (v. 13)
- As in the day – darkness hides sin (John 3:19-20); we should have nothing to hide (Philippians 2:15)
- Carousing & drunkenness (cf. 1 Peter 4:3) – emphasis on sober-mindedness” (1 Peter 5:8)
- Sexual promiscuity & sensuality (cf. 1 Corinthians 6:18; 2 Timothy 2:22) – emphasis on purity in all manner of life (James 1:21)
- Strife & jealousy (cf. Galatians 5:21) – emphasis on unity (Ephesians 4:3) and contentment (Philippians 4:11-13)
Put on Christ (v. 14)
- We normally talk about putting on Christ in baptism (Galatians 3:27) – must be mindful of this daily; same as taking up our cross daily (Luke 9:23)
- Make no provision for the flesh – the things of this world are only temporary (1 John 2:15-17); seek the things that are above (Colossians 3:2)
