Text: Matthew 6:24-34
It is easy to allow ourselves to worry about various things in life. Some people become so consumed by anxiety that they find it difficult to function. In our text, Jesus gave eight reasons why we should not worry.
Do Not Worry Because…
We Serve the Wrong Master When We Do (v. 24)
- We often worry about material things – worrying about them can choke out the word (Luke 8:14)
- We must learn to be content with what we have (Philippians 4:11) – material things are not the priority (v. 33)
Other Things Are More Important (v. 25)
- We need our basic necessities (food, water, clothing) – but they are not the most important things
- Paul endured hunger, thirst, and exposure (2 Corinthians 11:27) – he knew that following Christ came first (Philippians 3:8)
God Cares for Us (v. 26, 28-29)
- Jesus cited the birds and flowers, which were created by God (Genesis 1:20-21, 11-12) – but He also created man and placed him at the head of the created world (Genesis 1:26-28)
- God will provide for us as He does for creation (Acts 14:17) – we can cast our cares on Him (1 Peter 5:7)
Worrying Does No Good (v. 27)
- Difference in translations (“single hour,” NASB; “one cubit,” KJV) but the point is the same – worry does no good
- We are to make the most of our time (Ephesians 5:16) – worrying is not an effective use of our time
Worrying Is a Sign of Little Faith (v. 30)
- God cares for us (v. 26, 28-29) – He also knows our needs and will provide (v. 31-33)
- Do we believe that? – it is better to serve God than not, even if it is not immediately obvious (Ecclesiastes 8:12-13)
God Knows Our Needs (v. 31-32)
- God created us and knows our needs – even in prayer, we are not giving Him new information (Matthew 6:7-8)
- Therefore, do not be anxious (Philippians 4:6-7) – be thankful instead
God Has Promised to Provide (v. 33)
- We are to seek first the kingdom – if we do, all these other things will be added
- But that does not mean we will get everything we hope for in this life – we still need contentment (1 Timothy 6:5-6)
Each Day Has Enough Trouble of Its Own (v. 34)
- Everyday we have responsibilities to meet – this is in addition to our spiritual obligations
- Focus on your responsibilities for today (Ecclesiastes 9:10) – do not let an uncertain future hinder you
Conclusion
- None of this is to say that we should not plan or prepare for the future
- Make plans and preparations, but remember that the future is out of our control (cf. James 4:13-16)
- We must put God first and not become distracted by worrying over the things of this life
