Contraceptives, Abortion, and Infanticide

Text: Genesis 9:6; Psalm 127:3-5

These have become hot topics of late. When addressing these issues, it is important that we do so from a Biblical perspective

Contraceptives

  • Contraception refers to various things that are used to prevent pregnancy – no Scriptural argument to say all contraceptives are wrong in all cases
  • Fall under realm of conscience (Romans 14:22-23) – provided they only prevent pregnancy, and not terminate pregnancy as a “back-up” measure
  • However, contraceptives often used as a “safety net” for those who engage in fornication
  • God has given a relationship in which sexual desires can be fulfilled (Hebrews 13:4) – flee fornication (1 Corinthians 6:18); there are spiritual consequences for our actions (1 Corinthians 6:9)

Abortion

  • Abortion ends a human life – one that was made in God’s image (Genesis 9:6); one that was already recognized by God (Jeremiah 1:4-5; Psalm 139:13-16)
  • Pro-abortion advocates argue that a woman has a right to control her body – true, she could have chosen not to engage in behavior that would get her pregnant; nothing has changed about how this happens since the beginning (Genesis 4:1)
  • Abortion could be done out of convenience – shows one to be arrogant & self-centered (Philippians 2:3-4), and without natural affection (Romans 1:31)
  • Abortion could be done for political or national interests (Amos 1:13-15) – all are made in the image of God (Acts 17:26); all are to be seen as equal (Galatians 3:28)

Infanticide

  • This might seem unthinkable, but it’s not (Jeremiah 32:35)
  • When “ethicists” argue in favor of “after-birth abortions,” they are at least consistent – Scriptures teach there is no difference between an unborn child and a child who has already been born (Luke 1:41; 2:12)
  • Not everyone can justify or carry out infanticide; requires one of two things – either an ungodly hatred toward the infant, or an unwavering devotion to a false ideology (Molech; liberalism/progressivism)

Conclusion

  • Righteousness exalts a nation (Proverbs 14:34) – how far our “civilized” culture has fallen
  • God instituted capital punishment for murder (Genesis 9:6) – role of government today (Romans 13:4)
  • Yet instead of carrying out this divinely-appointed duty, the government is considering paying for these “services”
