What is Lost Because of Sin

Text: Genesis 3:22-24

Satan tempts us to sin by highlighting its benefits (Genesis 3:4-6) and pleasures (Hebrews 11:25-26). He does not want us to look beyond what is immediately before us. He wants us to focus on the temporary pleasures we can gain from sin and ignore what we stand to lose because of sin. What is that?

Man’s Fall in the Garden – 3 things we lost when sin came into the world.

Paradise Lost

  • After sin, Adam & Eve were driven out & prevented from returning (Genesis 3:24)
  • Upon losing access to paradise, man was forced to work hard to survive (Genesis 3:19)
  • Difficulties continue to arise for each one on account of sin (Proverbs 13:15)

Fellowship Broken

  • While in the Garden, Adam & Eve enjoyed direct, personal fellowship with God (Genesis 3:8) – when they were driven out, this close fellowship was lost
  • Sin separates us from God (Isaiah 59:2)
  • It is not in God’s nature to accept or have fellowship with wickedness (1 John 1:5)

Eternal Life Forfeited

  • When Adam & Eve were driven from the Garden, they lost access to the tree of life (Genesis 3:22)
  • As a consequence of Adam’s sin, all will face physical death (1 Corinthians 15:21-22)
  • We also stand to face “the second death” (Revelation 20:14) – not for Adam’s sin, but for our own (Ezekiel 18:20)

Restoration in Christ – After the fall we find the first prophecy about Christ (Genesis 3:15). He makes it possible for that which was lost because of sin to be restored to us.

Paradise Found

  • Even with Christ’s sacrifice, we are not promised paradise on earth
  • But we can find it after this life (Luke 16:22,25; Revelation 21:4)

Fellowship Restored

  • Jesus came to restore fellowship between man & God (Ephesians 2:16)
  • His blood provides forgiveness (Ephesians 1:7)

Eternal Life Regained

  • Eternal life is a “free gift” in Christ (Romans 6:23) – even so, it is conditional (John 8:24; Luke 13:3,5; Romans 10:9-10; Acts 2:38; Revelation 2:10)
  • Though the tree of life was lost, we find it again in heaven (Revelation 22:2) – Who will get there? (Revelation 22:14)
