Admonition to the Corinthians

Text: 1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Before closing his first letter to Corinth, Paul gives the brethren five admonitions. These instructions were not given because of a peculiar situation that existed among the brethren there. They are general instructions that all Christians can apply as well. So let us consider what Paul urged the Corinthians to do, and what we ought to do as well.

Be On the Alert

  • Christians must be on the alert at all times (1 Peter 5:8)
  • Be on the alert for the devil (1 Peter 5:8) – threat of sin (Hebrews 3:12-13) & error (Acts 20:30-31; Matthew 16:6,12)
  • Be on the alert for opportunities to do good (Galatians 6:10)
  • Be on the alert for the day of the Lord (Matthew 24:36,42)

Stand Firm in the Faith

  • Paul already told them to be steadfastimmovable (1 Corinthians 15:58)
  • We are to be firmly rooted (Luke 8:13) – not tossed as a ship without an anchor (Ephesians 4:14); we have an anchor (Hebrews 6:19-20)
  • Stand firm in the faith – standing firm in sin or error is not commendable; we must repent (Acts 18:24-28)
  • This faith which has been revealed in the word of God (Jude 3) is a fixed standard – we must not drift away from it (Hebrews 2:1-3)

Act Like Men

  • Not the modern stereotype – immature, lazy, unintelligent, having a mind that revolves around sexuality
  • Even if the stereotype is often true, we must not be conformed to the world (Romans 12:2)
  • Must act like the Biblical description of men – mature (1 Corinthians 14:20); hardworking (Colossians 3:23); knowledgeable/wise (Ephesians 5:17; Hebrews 5:12-14); sober-minded (1 Peter 1:13-16)

Be Strong

  • Cannot rely on our own strength (2 Corinthians 1:8-9)
  • Must be strong in the Lord (Ephesians 6:10) – How? … put on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:11-17)
  • Developing strength takes exercise/practice (1 Corinthians 9:27; Hebrews 5:14)

Let All Things Be Done in Love

  • Not love for the world (1 John 2:15) – this would allow one to pursue anything he desires (2 Timothy 4:10)
  • Love for God (1 John 5:3) & Christ (John 14:15)
  • Love for truth (2 Thessalonians 2:10)
  • Love for others (Colossians 3:14; 1 Corinthians 13:13)
