Growing Number of Single Moms Who Have Never Married

Text: Genesis 1:27-28

God designed marriage to be between a man and a woman, and that children would be born in this relationship. Our society has long been perverting God’s plan for marriage and the home. Example: Since 1960, the number of single mothers who have never married has risen from 4% to 44% (Pew Research Center report). Why are so many children being born out of wedlock? The statistics reveal some sad truths about society. We will consider them in this lesson in light of the Scriptures.

Promiscuity Among Young People

  • God designed marriage to be the relationship in which sexual desires are fulfilled (Hebrews 13:4) – youth is not an excuse for sin (Ecclesiastes 11:9); fornication is still condemned (1 Corinthians 6:9)
  • If a couple cannot control themselves, they need to marry (1 Corinthians 7:2) – committed Christians will work it out, even if they’re young (Ephesians 5:25,28-29; Titus 2:3-4)
  • Pregnancy outside of marriage is no longer as shameful as it used to be – when shame no longer exists, sin will increase (Jeremiah 6:15)

The Devaluation of Marriage

  • Marriage is to be held in honor among all” (Hebrews 13:4) – Why? … God established the institution of marriage (Matthew 19:4-6)
  • Marriage is a life-long relationship between a man and a woman in which the two of them can find love, companionship, sexual fulfillment, and one to complement themselves
  • Marriage is devalued in our culture – through promiscuity (it is not seen as something to wait for); through divorce (it is not seen as something to work to preserve); through legitimizing sexual deviancy (it is not seen as being bound to tradition or morality); through civil leaders trying to redefine marriage (it is not seen as being defined by God)
  • Marriage is not special or sacred to many in society – this statistic is one consequence of this thinking

Fathers Are Seen as Expendable

  • Society has systematically painted a stereotype of men as being immature, irresponsible imbeciles; as if the husband/father is just like another child for the wife/mother to take care of – sadly, many men have stooped to this expectation
  • Families need good, godly men as husbands & fathers – to lead (Ephesians 5:23); to teach (Ephesians 6:4); to provide (1 Timothy 5:8)
  • Though a household may need to function without a father (such as when death occurs), it is handicapped without him

Mothers Are Seen as Self-Sufficient

  • The feminist movement has taught young girls & women that they can do anything a man can do – in the home, they do not need a husband/father around
  • Women may be intelligent & capable of a great number of things, but God have them a role in the home – as a helpmeet (Genesis 2:18), not as the head (Ephesians 5:22-23); as a worker at home (Titus 2:5)

  • When people do not respect & follow God’s design for the home, society as a whole suffers for it
  • Ideal circumstances may not always exist because of sin (i.e. divorce) or tragedy (i.e. death) – but God’s plan should not be discarded because of personal preference or cultural shifts
  • We must do all in the name of the Lord (Colossians 3:17) – this includes how we function in the home
