Today

Text: Hebrews 3:14-15

This is the eighth and final lesson in a series of lessons examining some great days in history – not in secular history, but days of spiritual importance. In this eighth lesson, we’re not going to keep moving further down a timeline (nothing past the day of eternity). Instead, we’re going to talk about today – what we need to do with what we’ve learned in this series.

The Background

  • We have experienced God’s blessings in this life (James 1:17) – both the righteous and the wicked (Matthew 5:45); should lead us to put our trust in God (1 Timothy 6:17)
  • We have also experienced hardships in this life (Job 14:1) – both the righteous and the wicked (Proverbs 13:15; Ecclesiastes 8:14); should cause us to turn to God (Psalm 50:15)
  • God did everything necessary to make salvation possible (Titus 2:11; Matthew 22:4) – theme of this series

The Events on That Day

  • Life goes on as it always does (Matthew 24:36-42; 2 Peter 3:4) – God continues to bless us (Genesis 8:22); we continue to face hardships (Romans 8:18)
  • God continues to be patient (Romans 2:4) – not to condone sin, but to give us the opportunity to repent (2 Peter 3:9; Ezekiel 18:32)
  • We will make choices regarding our conduct and manner of life (Joshua 24:15) – many plans we may make (Proverbs 19:21); this is why persuasion is used to lead people to obey the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:11)

Key Lessons

  • Now is the time to prepare (2 Corinthians 6:2) – no promise of tomorrow (James 4:13-14; Luke 12:19-20); cannot allow tomorrow to distract us from what we should focus on (Matthew 6:33-34)
  • Our past does not have to hinder us (Philippians 3:13-14) – no matter what sins we’ve committed, we can begin serving God today (1 Timothy 1:12-16); no matter how much time we have wasted, we can begin serving God today (Matthew 20:1-16); no matter what good we have done, we need to continue serving the Lord (1 Corinthians 9:24-27)
  • We must decide what we will do (Joshua 24:15) – no one can make the choice for you; each one will make his own decision
