Understanding God through the Creation

Understanding God through the CreationText: Romans 1:20

The Bible begins by telling the account of creation. This is not just a children’s story. It teaches us certain things about God. The world wants us to dismiss it, but we must not do so. In this lesson, we are going to be reminded about certain things that we can understand about God through the creation.

God Pre-Existed All Things

  • In the beginning God…” (Genesis 1:1) – before the heavens and earth were formed
  • He is the builder of all things (Hebrews 3:4) – the “uncaused cause”; creation is proof of Him (Romans 1:20)
  • He is eternal (Psalm 90:2) – existed before time itself; He is not bound by time (cf. 2 Peter 3:8)

God Has Power Over All Things

  • The creation shows His divine power (Romans 1:20) – He can do beyond what we can imagine (Ephesians 3:20)
  • He has authority over the world and everything in it (Ephesians 1:21; Colossians 1:16-17)
  • He has the power over life and death (James 4:12)

God Has a Plan for What He Does

  • The days of creation show an orderly design (Genesis 1) – light, waters/expanse, dry land (days 1-3); lights in heavens, fish/birds, land animals/man (days 4-6)
  • He does not change (Malachi 3:6) – also means that He does not change His mind (cf. 1 Samuel 15:29)
  • His word is settled in heaven (Psalm 119:89) – it is consistent (John 10:35)

God Made All Things for Our Good

  • Everything He made was “very good” (Genesis 1:31)
  • Everything was put under man’s stewardship (Genesis 1:29) – we were made in His image (Genesis 1:27); special
  • Every good thing in life is from Him (James 1:17)

What Does This Mean for Us?

  • If God pre-existed all things, then there is something beyond this life (2 Peter 3:7, 13)
  • If God has power over all things, then we need to humble ourselves before Him (1 Peter 5:6)
  • If God has a plan for what He does, then we need to trust Him and submit to His will (Ecclesiastes 12:13; John 2:5)
  • If God made all things for our good, then we need to show gratitude (1 Timothy 4:4-5)

Conclusion

  • In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1)
  • Because of this, we need to trust in Him and do His will
  • He is willing to provide us with a reward that is far better than even the richest blessings in this life
