Lord’s Supper

Text: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

Practice of the Lord’s Supper

  • Emblems – unleavened bread (Matthew 26:17), fruit of the vine (Matthew 26:29)
  • Time – first day of the week (Acts 20:7)
  • Frequency – every first day of the week (we learn this by implication)
  • Time Frame – from the establishment of the kingdom (Matthew 26:29) until the second coming of Christ (1 Corinthians 11:26)
  • Place – in the assembly (1 Corinthians 11:17-20,33)

Abuses of the Lord’s Supper

  • Making it into a common meal (1 Corinthians 11:20-22,34)
  • Adding things to it (singing, testimonials, etc.)
  • Changing the focus (resurrection, second coming, our lives as Christians, etc.)

Purpose of the Lord’s Supper

  • Memorial of the death of Christ (1 Corinthians 11:26)
  • Remember His body – sufferings of Christ
  • Remember His blood – how terrible sin is
