Lessons from the Shortest Psalm

Text: Psalm 117

This psalm is the shortest chapter in the Bible (two verses). Yet it contains some important lessons for us.

God is Worthy of Praise

  • This psalm begins and ends with a call to praise the Lord – glorify, honor, and worship Him
  • What are we declaring when we worship and praise God? … He is greater than us; we are subject to Him; we are dependent upon Him; we are accountable to Him
  • Nations should praise Him – God is greater than the rulers (Ephesians 1:21); rulers are subject to Him (Psalm 72:11); rulers are dependent upon Him (John 19:11); rulers are accountable to Him (Jeremiah 25:12)
  • All people should praise Him – He is greater than us (Psalm 100:3); we are subject to Him (Psalm 100:2); we are dependent upon Him (Acts 17:28); we are accountable to Him (Ecclesiastes 12:14)
  • So we must praise God – worship Him according to His instructions (John 4:24)

God’s Lovingkindness is Great

  • God chose the nation of Israel as His people (Deuteronomy 7:6) – continually displayed His lovingkindness toward them (Deuteronomy 7:8; Joshua 21:43-45; et al)
  • The lovingkindness God showed to Israel is an example to us (Romans 15:4) – His lovingkindness is shown to us in the form of physical blessings (Acts 14:17), the sacrifice of Christ (John 3:16), the hope of eternal life (Romans 6:23), and His patience toward us (2 Peter 3:9)
  • God owes us nothing – any hope we have is through His lovingkindness

God’s Truth is Everlasting

  • God’s word has always been true and will always be true (Psalm 119:160)
  • This doesn’t mean He hasn’t changed His law/covenant (Jeremiah 31:31; Colossians 2:14) – simply means His words are always true (John 17:17); even the Old Law, though no longer binding, is still true (2 Timothy 3:16)
  • The truth of God’s word is everlasting (Psalm 119:89; 1 Peter 1:25) – His word continues to be preached until the end comes (Matthew 28:20)
