God’s Plan for You

God's Plan for YouText: Jeremiah 29:11

This verse is a favorite for many people. Yet it is important to note the context – the restoration of the Jews from Babylon after 70 years in captivity (v. 10, 14). But many take this verse, apply it to their lives, and assume that God must have a plan for every detail (jobs, homes, families, hardships, etc.). God does have a plan for you (though not the one mentioned in our text). This plan is shown in the Bible.

God Desires for You to Be in Heaven with Him

  • It is really that simple – God is in heaven and wants YOU to be there too
  • Jesus told His apostles of the place that would be prepared for them (John 14:2-3) – Jesus would depart to prepare this place, then return later to bring them to that place
  • This promise was not just for the apostles, but for all of us as well (John 3:16; Mark 16:15-16; 2 Timothy 4:7-8)

In Order for This Plan to Be Fulfilled…

God Had to Deal with the Problem of Sin

  • Sin separates man from God (Isaiah 59:2) – sin was the reason why Adam and Eve had to be expelled from the Garden (Genesis 3:24; cf. 1 John 1:5)
  • Sin is a universal problem (Romans 3:23) – no one of accountable age is exempt (1 John 1:8, 10)
  • Christ was going to have to deal with sin – He came to reconcile us to God (Ephesians 2:16); this would require His death on the cross (1 Peter 3:18; 2:24)

Christ Had to Come to Earth

  • God’s eternal purpose was fulfilled in Christ (Ephesians 3:11) – His predetermined plan involved the death of Christ (Acts 2:23)
  • In order for this plan to be carried out, several things had to be done to prepare the way for Christ – He came in the fullness of time (Galatians 4:4); John the Baptist would prepare the way for Christ (Mark 1:2-4); the prophets foretold of Christ (1 Peter 1:10-12); the lineage of Christ was preserved (Matthew 1:1; Genesis 12:1-3; Jeremiah 29:10-14); prophecy of Jesus coming to defeat Satan (Genesis 3:15), and this was fulfilled (Hebrews 2:14-15)
  • God has done so much in order to save YOU – do not think lightly of this (Romans 2:4); “the kindness of God LEADS YOU to repentance“; there is a role we play in this; God’s plan includes what He expects us to do

Man Had to Be Shown the Way

  • We cannot direct ourselves (Jeremiah 10:23) – THE way to heaven is through Christ (John 14:6); one way
  • The eternal purpose in Christ would be made known through the gospel (Ephesians 3:6-11) – the gospel is for all (Mark 16:15-16)
  • God has predestined us according to His purpose (Ephesians 1:5, 11) – “He chose us in Him” (Ephesians 1:4); we get IN Christ through baptism (Romans 6:3; Galatians 3:27; 1 Corinthians 12:13); we must then be “holy and blameless” as we conduct our lives according to a certain standard
  • Our duty is to fear God and keep His commandments (Ecclesiastes 12:13) – He saves those who obey Him (Hebrews 5:9)

Conclusion

  • Rather than focus on details, let us focus on the big picture – this is what we can know from Scripture
  • Circumstances will change in this life – there will be times of joy, suffering, prosperity, loss, etc.
  • But this remains constant – God wants you to be with Him in heaven; let’s follow His plan to get there
