The Same-Sex Marriage Debate

Text: Hebrews 13:4

Marriage is an honorable institution and must be honored by all men. Yet man has disregarded & corrupted this institution in many ways – same-sex marriage is one example. As people are engaged in discussions about same-sex marriage, it is important for Christians to be prepared to teach & defend the truth on this issue.

Defining Marriage

  • Defined by God; cannot be redefined by man – God instituted it in the beginning (Genesis 2:24); He is witness to the covenant (Malachi 2:14); He binds people in marriage (Matthew 19:6)
  • Government has no role in defining/establishing marriage – God gave civil government a different purpose (Romans 13:3-4); what government chooses to recognize or not doesn’t change the definition
  • God’s definition of marriage: one man & one woman for life – from the beginning, unchanging (Matthew 19:4-8); for all people (descendants of Adam & Eve, Genesis 2:24; “among all,” Hebrews 13:4); changes to God’s plan are condemned (Hebrews 13:4)

Condemnation for Homosexuality

  • Homosexuality condemned under all three dispensations – Patriarchal age (Genesis 19:4-5; Jude 7); Mosaic age (Leviticus 18:22; 20:13); Gospel age (Romans 1:26-27; 1 Timothy 1:9-11)
  • It is a choice (Romans 1:26-27)
  • It is contrary to nature (Romans 1:26-27)
  • In a sense, it is worse than other sins – not that punishment is worse, but the “depraved mind” (Romans 1:28); very hard to change because one has to alter the way he would naturally think in order to practice it
  • It will be punished by God (Romans 1:32; Jude 7)

Hope for Homosexuals

  • Although homosexuality is condemned, we are not to hate homosexuals (Jude 23)
  • There is hope for them – they can change, despite what many argue (1 Corinthians 6:9-11); they can be saved if they repent (2 Peter 3:9)
