Psalm 23 and the Christian

Text: Psalm 23

Psalm 23 is one of the most well-known and well-loved passages in the Bible. Though it was written during the time of the Old Law, there are certainly lessons contained in it that apply to us as Christians.

“The Lord is my shepherd” (v. 1)

  • Each one of us, as individuals, must make the choice to follow the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:10)
  • He does not force us to follow Him if we are unwilling (Matthew 23:37)

“I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters” (v. 1-2)

  • The Lord provides what we need (James 1:17; 2 Peter 1:3)
  • But we must be content with what He provides (Philippians 4:11-12)

“He restores my soul” (v. 3)

  • He provides spiritual life (John 10:9-10)
  • We have passed from death to life (John 5:24)

“He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake” (v. 3)

  • The righteousness of God is revealed in the gospel (Romans 1:16-17)
  • The Lord leads us to a life of obedience (1 Peter 2:21-22; 1:2)

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me” (v. 4)

  • Those who follow the Lord will be persecuted (2 Timothy 3:12)
  • But we must not fear (1 Peter 3:13-14; Matthew 10:28)

“Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me” (v. 4)

  • As we put our trust in the Lord, we can enjoy the peace of God (Philippians 4:6-7)
  • We can find comfort in His promises (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18)

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows” (v. 5)

  • Even though we are surrounded by enemies, the Lord will be with us and bless us (Romans 8:31-39)
  • In the end, our enemies will witness our glorification with the Lord (Romans 8:17)

“Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life” (v. 6)

  • The Lord will be with us and will not forsake us (Hebrews 13:5-6)
  • We can have confidence in His mercy and goodness (Hebrews 4:16)

“And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (v. 6)

  • The Lord offers eternal life to those who follow Him (Romans 6:23)
  • We can be assured of this hope (1 John 2:28-29)
